The Transliteratures Project

Extra-Curricular Activities

The Transliteratures Project regularly sponsors events emphasizing common interests of the foreign literature programs. Since the spring of 2000, Transliteratures has funded over half a dozen lectures by distinguished guest scholars; two roundtables on the question of translation; two one-day graduate student conferences ("Appropriation and Imitation," in 2001; "Text and Image," in 2002), and organized visits to intellectual and artistic institutions in the New York metropolitan area.

In 2001-2002, Transliteratures funded or participated in the funding of several events, including a two-day "Workshop on Multilingualism and Second Language Acquisition", organized by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese; a one-day colloquium on Arabic vs French literary traditions in the countries of the Maghreb, organized by the Department of French, in collaboration with the Center for African Studies and the Program in Middle-Eastern Studies; and a two-day conference on "The State of the Public Sphere in an Age of Globalization," organized by the Graduate Program of German.

Starting in November 2002, the Transliteratures Project's web-site will carry, and update regularly, a calendar for all upcoming foreign literature-related events at Rutgers.
