The Transliteratures Project

Fellowships

The Transliteratures Project awards special five-year, high-stipend fellowships to incoming foreign-literature graduate students with outstanding dossiers and serious knowledge in at least two of the foreign languages taught at Rutgers at the graduate level. Candidates meeting these criteria are selected and recommended by their Department, and approved by the Directors of Transliteratures. The support is of $18,000 per year. Fellows teach a course per semester during three of the five years (usually years 2,3, and 4.)

Transliteratures Fellows are required to take at least two (an incoming M.A.: one) seminars in one (or two) graduate program(s) in foreign literature other than their own, with the texts being read, and, other than in Classics, the papers being written in the original language. The two seminars, which have to be taken before the student's Ph.D. comprehensive examinations, carry credits, but in addition to the number of credits normally needed for graduation in the student's home program.

Please note: these requirements, which concern only Transliteratures Fellows, do not supplement but replace the curricular requirements applicable to non-Fellows.
