The Transliteratures Project

Plans

I. A course on the teaching of foreign literature to undergraduates. The Transliteratures Project is in the process of developing an interprogrammatic graduate course on methods of teaching foreign literature to undergraduates, which will parallel the existing course on the methodology of teaching a foreign language. Individual graduate programs will make their own determination as to the credits carried (or not) by such a course, which will be funded by Transliteratures.

II. A semester or a year abroad
While more and more graduate students in foreign literature find ways to spend some time in a country where the language of their specialization is spoken by most people, there are still many students who have difficulties doing so. The Transliteratures Project is intent on finding the financial and administrative means to insure that in the future all students specializing in a foreign literature have an opportunity, before completing their doctoral studies, to spend a significant period of time, and take graduate seminars, in the country most relevant to their studies - or, in the case of Classics, in a summer program offered by either the American School of Classical Studies at Athens or the American Academy in Rome.
