The Transliteratures Project

Summer Classes

Every summer, Transliteratures offers intensive courses for graduate students, with a focus on reading capability - as opposed to speaking or writing - in French, German, Latin, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese. Transliteratures is coordinating and funding these courses, which are tuition-free, and restricted to Rutgers-registered graduate students, with first priority going to students in literature, English included. Whenever enrollment numbers make it possible, graduate students from other disciplines in the Humanities and Social Sciences can register as well. Class-size is limited to a maximum of fifteen students, and attendance and work requirements are strict, so as to protect the integrity of the registration process, as well as of the class itself.

While the Transliteratures summer classes do not carry credits, class performance is graded, and the grade is reported to the student's home program. Many graduate programs accept a final "A" in a Transliteratures class as fulfilling a foreign language requirement. The final decision in this regard is made by the individual Graduate Programs, and it is the responsibility of the students to ascertain their home program's policy in this matter.

Schedules, registration deadlines, and other details concerning the Transliteratures summer classes are announced during the very first weeks of every spring semester.
